Use small furniture
So you have a small room. It is only obvious for you to use small furniture. Why use a queen-sized bed or even a five-seater couch if you know that your space is limited? Small furniture not only take up small space in your room but they are also easy to move. So if in case you need more space in certain instances, you can simply move these small furnishings to other room for the mean time. There are a lot of small furnishings out there that are also portable as well as foldable. And the good news is that they are not that expensive at all. They are specifically designed for small rooms, apartments, and condo units.
Consider the idea of ‘hanging’ frequently
Knowing that you have limited floor space, you should consider the idea of hanging more frequently. Why put it on the floor when you can hang it? Hang as much as you can. Put a lot of hooks, rods, and storage racks on your walls. You would be surprised as to how much space you can save by simply hanging your things. If you have a flat screen TV, consider mounting it instead of putting it on a TV desk. Instead of a floor lamp, go for a mounted lamp. Make sure that all the items that you hang on your walls look great. They should not only save floor space but they should also add positively to the aesthetics of the room.
Make use of the space below the bed
Use the space below your bed for storage. Underneath your bed you can put boxes, wooden chests, or plastic storage containers that hold various knickknacks and accessories. Or you can even store underneath your bed various items such as folding chairs, folding tables, extra mattresses, and other items. One trick that a lot of people do is the use of bed risers. Bed risers add several inches to the space underneath your bed. These are not expensive at all and they come in various designs. In fact, if you are crafty, you can purchase some wooden blocks and design your own bed risers. You might require some extra hands, though, so that the bed would be lifted up and the risers would be put into place.
Opt more for shelves than bare walls
It is also practical to make heavy use of shelves. Use the shelves to cover your bare walls. A lot of people with small rooms use shelves that go from floor to ceiling. That is a very efficient way of using available room space. There are so many things that you can display on your shelves. Of course, you can keep in these some books and magazines as well as various decorative items like figurines or flower vases. All or perhaps three of your walls can be covered with shelves. And when using shelves, opt for the thin ones instead of the thick ones. This is so that your room would not look crowded.
Get a projector rather than a TV
Do you love to watch movies? You would want to be able to watch movies in the basement-turned-bedroom, don’t you? But the problem is that your TV monitor might take up extra space. As mentioned earlier, you can consider mounting your TV. But what if there is not enough space for that option either? Well, you can always do away with your TV monitor and consider getting an LCD projector instead. All you need is a bare wall and you can watch your favourite movies in big screen. A lot of people use LCD projectors instead of TV’s nowadays. Take note thought that you would have to replace the LCD bulb from time to time.
