How To Make A Cozy Guest Room Out Of Your Basement

Having a guest room in your home can surely make it a more hospitable place than it already is. If somebody dear to you visits you, like your mother-in-law or a distance cousin perhaps, wouldn’t it be nice if you can let them stay in their own room? Would not it be nice if nobody has to sleep on the couch? Well, you might say that it can be quite expensive to have another room constructed and added to your house. You do not have to do that just to have a guest house. You can simply turn your basement into one. Here are some tips on how to make your basement a cozy bedroom.

Keep the room warm with proper insulation

Most basements have bare concrete walls. And since basements are buried beneath the ground, it would not be a surprise if they are quite cooler than the average room temperature. You would not want to sleep in a cold room especially during the chilliest winter nights, do you? You would not want your guests to experience that either. So make sure your basement has proper insulation. Going for a carpet floor or adding wooden panels are good ideas as well. Also, you might want to consider adding a fireplace. This is very much recommended especially if you live in a very cold climate. Not only can it add warmth but it can also be a focal point in your room.

Ensure proper air circulation

Also, you would want to ensure proper air circulation. Most basements do not have windows. You should consider having windows for your basement especially if you want it to look homely. You would not want to cramp your guests in a four-walled, windowless room. It would pretty much look like a prison without windows. You would want your guest to enjoy fresh air, don’t you? Also, the outdoor light that the windows would let in can add an aesthetic appeal to your guest room. If your basement room is a little bit humid, consider adding a humidifier. Or better yet, add a HVAC system. An exhaust fan that helps eliminate odor would also make your guest room very livable.

Make it look like an apartment

In order to ensure the homeliness of your guest room, you have to make it look like a mini-apartment. It must basically have all the furnishings that you know your guests would need. This means that there can be a cabinet that has things like bath towels, toiletries, and pajamas. Never forget to have chairs or tables. These would be very useful especially for guests who are to stay for days or weeks. If you want, you can even add appliances like a refrigerator or even a small TV. Also, if your basement really has a lot of space, you might even want to consider adding a shower area – or even a bathroom!

Choose a good design theme

Also, you need to have a good design theme for your guest room. You can pattern its design according to the main theme of your house, if you like. Or, like other people, you can have a unique theme for your guest room. You are renovating your basement, anyway. You might as well be very creative in going for a design theme. Basically, you can go for a traditional, contemporary, or modern look.  There are subcategories for these – specific themes that are very popular include European themes, Western themes, and the likes. Having a theme for your guest room can ensure uniformity and cohesiveness when it comes to design and decoration.

Decorate it as any other room in the house

Never exert too much effort nor exert minimum effort in decorating your guest room. Decorate it as you would decorate other rooms in the house. Your goal is to make the guest room as homely as possible. So decorate the wall with wall clocks, picture frames, or paintings. Have wallpapers that are soothing to the eyes. Assume that you would live in that guest room for a long time. Or in other words, put yourself in the shoes of your guest. What do you expect from a guest room if you ever become a guest in somebody else’s home?

These are just some quick tips on how to make a cozy guest room out of your basement. Yes, there might be a lot of changes that you should make to your sleazy old basement. Also, there would be some costs. But at the end, if you exert the right amount effort in renovation and design, everything would be worth it.
